Real candle wax that smells like vanilla. Mine has no dripping feature. The "flame" is a teardrop-shaped piece of plastic that looks bad if viewed with the candle turned "off." I put my candle up high, so any views are sideways and not straight down. The remote control worked intermittently - at first I thought it didn't work at all. I think the range is very limited for the remote. You need to turn the switch, located on the bottom of the candle, to the "on" position; otherwise, the remote won't turn on the candle. Once the switch is in the "on" position, you can turn the candle on or off with the remote.I tried out the "candle" versus "light" features on the remote. The "candle" feature makes the illumination waver or flicker more than the "light" feature. So nice to turn the candle to off with the remote since I placed one inside a tall thick-walled clear glass cylinder and thought I would need to haul the candle out every time I wanted to turn it on or off. Not so with the remote. Thank you!I went crazy when the candle store, Illuminations, was in business. I used Illuminations' scented candles & cool candle holders all the time. I had to wash my bathroom ceiling from soot from a candle I had mounted on the wall in a holder. I still have soot on my living room ceiling from candles too. I know, I needed to trim the wicks more frequently. I think this fake candle is such a great idea!
